While trying to find a good commercial to make a post on, I stumbled upon one of the funniest advertising gimmicks I have ever seen. Gatorade has a new campaign, called "Mission G", and within that campaign is a hilarious commercial. In this commercial there is quite a bit of intertextuality. Now for those of you who don't know what intertextuality means, my fantastic, smart, funny teacher (no, I am not sucking up) describes it as layers of meaning, or a theory of how we understand and interpret cultural texts. To sum it up in my own words, it is when you see something that reminds you of something else. In this commercial there is vertical intertextuality because the advertsing connects back to the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. If the watcher had never seen nor heard of Monty Python before watching this then they wouldn't have understood the commercial. The vertical intertextuality is so detailed that they even have the famous gymnast Alicia Sacromone clicking coconuts together to symbolize a running horse, just like Monty Python. Speaking of that, there is another vertical intertextual link in the commercial. Gatorade uses famous athletes in order to connect their drink with success. I don't want to give too much away, but Gatorade uses a connection to a famous movie and connections to famous athletes in order to draw the viewer in. The end product is hilarious...Enjoy!
